Before buying a smart thermostat, spend a little time with the controls already in your home. These seven checks help you spot a timetable or setting that no longer suits your routine.

This checklist is for homes with gas, oil or LPG boiler heating. Heat pumps, electric storage heaters and other systems need their own operating guidance. Keep the manufacturer's instructions beside you and photograph the starting settings so you have a record of what you change.
1 Find the right instructions
Write down the make and model of the programmer and thermostat. Find the matching user manual, including any guide left by the installer. Identify the everyday controls before adjusting anything; leave installer settings and wiring to the appropriate professional. Energy Saving Trust's heating-controls guide explains the main types.
2 Check the clock and programme
Confirm the day and time, then read through the heating periods. Do they fit this autumn's working hours and school routine? Check for an old holiday setting or a permanent override. Make a note to check the clock again when it changes in autumn, unless your programmer updates automatically.
3 Check the temperature you are asking for
Set the room thermostat for the warmth you need. On conventional on/off systems, turning it above that temperature does not make the house warm up faster. Keep comfort and health needs in mind; do not treat a lower setting as a target that everyone must meet. Energy Saving Trust covers thermostat use and programmer timing in its central-heating advice.
4 Read the radiator valves room by room
A thermostatic radiator valve, or TRV, responds to the temperature around it and adjusts the hot-water flow through its radiator. Its numbers are settings, not a universal temperature scale. Check the valve's instructions and adjust gradually for the room's use. Note persistent cold or overheating for an installer to investigate rather than repeatedly turning every control to maximum.
5 Give the sensors room to work
Look for furniture or curtains covering the room thermostat. Check whether a radiator cover encloses a TRV. Trapped warmth or blocked airflow can make the temperature sensed at the control unrepresentative of the room. Move the obstruction where practical; ask an installer about relocating a poorly positioned control.
6 Check each existing zone
If your home has separate heating zones, read the schedule for each. Label what each controller serves, especially where there is a mix of radiators and underfloor heating. Check any app schedule against the wall control. Record what happens during a normal heating period before deciding that you need additional equipment.
7 Keep stored hot water separate
A room thermostat, boiler flow control and hot-water-cylinder thermostat do different jobs. Do not transfer a radiator-temperature tip to a cylinder setting. Energy Saving Trust advises 60–65°C for a conventional cylinder thermostat; HSE explains the role of storing hot water at at least 60°C in controlling legionella. Water at those temperatures can scald, so safe delivery at taps also matters. Follow the system's instructions and ask your installer before changing an unfamiliar hot-water control.
After these checks, keep a short note of rooms that remain uncomfortable and when the problem occurs. That gives an installer something more useful than “the heating seems wrong”. If you are considering new controls, ask for a compatibility check and an installed price. Any saving depends on the home, system and how you already use the heating.
